Screening of Spanish documentary El Desencanto & Author Talk with Aaron Shulman - Central

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Central Library
Faulkner Gallery

The Santa Barbara Public Library will host this special screening and welcome Aaron Shulman, local author.

A cult classic in Spain on a par with Grey Gardens but rarely screened in the US, El Desencanto (The Disenchantment) tells the story of the Paneros, a brilliant and tormented literary family whose eccentricities and taboo-smashing exhibitionism turned them into a phenomenon in Spain the year after dictator Francisco Franco died.

The newly subtitled film is a national classic, valued and remembered for both the role it played in Spain’s transition to democracy and for the Paneros’ singular strangeness. This special screening will be hosted by Aaron Shulman, local author of a book about the Paneros, The Age of Disenchantments: The Epic Story of Spain’s Most Notorious Literary Family and the Long Shadow of the Spanish Civil War

A post-screening discussion will be held afterwards and Chaucer's Bookstore will be selling the book both before and after the showing of the film.
