Event Details

Each month we will read a different book that will have us examine different social injustices, stereotypes, and prejudices that exist in our current world. Whether it be an inspiring coming-of-age novel in the civil rights south, a true story of adversity challenging unjust laws, a beautiful picture book embracing all families, or a book of essays and prose from civil rights activists, this book club will explore all the facets of our shared humanity.

In partnership with Just Communities, Pacific Pride Foundation, Santa Barbara Transgender Advocacy Network, and Showing Up for Racial Justice.

July = Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" by Zora Neale Hurston

This month's Social Justice Book Club is also in partnership with the Music Academy of the West as they present Jennifer Higdon's opera Cold Mountain, based on Charles Frazier's Civil War novel of the same name. See the opera on Friday, August 2nd or Sunday, August 4th at the Granada Theatre. Visit musicadacemy.org/coldmountain for more information.
